Health & Safety Services for Schools

Safety in schools is essential but a school can be a complicated organisation to manage. In House Safety has a proven track record based upon long-standing partnerships with schools to provide support in the areas of food safety and health & safety.

Working closely with those who are responsible for the day to day running of a school requires a breadth of knowledge and expertise to ensure that pupils, staff, visitors and contractors are adequately protected. In House Safety is able to provide this expertise.

Food Safety

If your school provides a food service, you will have to comply with stringent food hygiene regulations. Poor food hygiene carries a heavy cost for your school – in terms of health, staff and reputation. So how can you be sure your food handling practices and procedures are up to scratch?

In House has a range of services to help you get them right, either by helping you set up your procedures from the start, or by checking that what you are currently doing is correct.

We can:

  • Development of food safety systems (your food safety manual), or reviewing existing ones
  • Audits and inspections
  • Training: On site and public courses, CIEH, HABC and bespoke courses
  • BIOSCANNING hygiene monitoring
  • Food sampling and allegation support
  • On-going support and advice

Throughout your service period we’re always on hand to answer any question about food safety or hygiene. Whether you have a minor query or a major crisis, we’re only a phone call or email away.

Health & Safety in Schools

The health and safety of everyone working within, visiting and living in a school site is paramount. It is understood that safety risks greatly increase where formal risk assessments have not been carried out sufficiently and safe systems of work not developed or followed. A school even of modest size is a highly complex and diverse operation involving a multitude of staff and contractors.

  • Development of Safety Management Systems
  • Risk assessments
  • Training – accredited or bespoke
  • Safety Support service
  • Accident investigations
  • Fire safety and fire risk assessments

Training

Staff training on the management of health and safety and the maintaining of safe working practices is another area where In House works extensively within the education sector. Courses provided include working at heights and ladder safety, manual handling, first aid, safe working for cleaning staff including COSHH safety and assessments, fire safety and fire marshalling. All can be provided on site by a team of highly experienced and qualified training providers. Training accredited by IOSH, CIEH and NEBOSH can be provided.

In House Safety is also there to provide help where expert advice is required for specific safety issues, responding rapidly to enquiries. Where accidents occur involving staff or pupils, the necessary support will be provided including on-site investigations, working closely with the school to help provide a satisfactory outcome and reduce the risk of recurrence.

In conjunction with IOSH we deliver two fantastic school-specific courses for Senior Leadership Teams and School Business Professionals.

In House administrates SafetyMARK, the National Safety Certification Scheme for Schools. It aims to recognise and reward those schools that have gone the extra mile to create a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. No matter what level of maturity your safety management systems are currently at, the on-site audit will generate a practical improvement plan and a benchmark against which to measure future successes.

SafetyMARK is as much about the process of improvement and the provision of support as it is about the final goal of the award.

Having reflected on my training with you I want to say a big thank you for your patience, knowledge and debate. It's been a while since I've had training and it's really renewed my drive to learn more. Working part-time has often been a stumbling block for training, and Zoom/Teams sessions take a bit of getting used to, but also means that they are more accessible for flexible workers like me.
